INFORMATION FOR APPLICANT

 

The following describes our 2009 scholarship information.  Check back here in January 2010 for information on our 2010 scholarships.

 

RB CHORALE 2009 SAN DIEGO MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

                             

The RB Chorale, Inc., has been giving Scholarship Awards for 34 years and announces its intention to offer from FOUR (4) to SIX (6) Scholarship Awards, totaling $10,000, to musically talented San Diego High School graduating students.  These awards are offered to those planning to attend a college or university to further their education, with music as their major.  Any field of musical endeavor is applicable: Voice, String, Wind, Percussion (no combo’s) or any other solo instrument.

 

This notice provides information on the selection process for Scholarship Awards to be presented at the Chorale’s May 8th and May 9th, 2009 Concerts. The Concerts will be held at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.

 

Awards of $5,000 will be divided between 2 or 3 participants each of the concert nights. The number of awards will depend upon the number and quality of the scholarship candidates participating.

 

SELECTION OF THE FINALIST is accomplished by the following four-step process:

1.   Applications are to be received by the RB Chorale, post marked no later than March 10, 2009. The Chorale Scholarship Committee will review the application and by mail, will notify each candidate of his/her time to appear for audition and interview.

    

2.   The candidate will audition for the RB Chorale’s Board of Directors in Rancho Bernardo, on Saturday morning March 28, 2009, starting at 9:30 AM.  You must limit your musical presentation to FIVE (5) minutes. It would also to your benefit to memorize your musical presentation.

     

3.  Following all auditions, each candidate will briefly interview with the Chorale’s Scholarship Committee regarding the information submitted in the application.

 

4.   A point value system is applied to areas of musical talent, selection of material, showmanship, appearance, length of presentation, memorization and interpretation of the music, scholastic record, financial needs and future plans to further your musical education.

 

The FOUR (4) to SIX (6) candidates receiving the highest combined points will be notified of their selection as finalists.  From these finalists the Chorale Board will select half to perform and compete on Friday night May 8th and the other half to perform and compete on Saturday night, May 9, 2009.  Amounts awarded to each finalist following their performance in the concert will be determined by audience ballot voting that evening.

 

NOTE:  The award recipients must be enrolled as a music major in an undergraduate music curriculum at an accredited college or university. Upon receipt of notice of enrollment from the proper school official, the RB Chorale will forward a check, in the amount of the award, to the school’s financial office for credit to the students account. Scholarship Awards must be used within one year from date awarded.

Your application package must include the following: (typed if possible) (READ CAREFULLY)

1.   Your application form.

2.   A summary (under 300 words) written by you, describing your general and musical qualities and your scholastic plans. (If in your application you indicate your talent in more than one musical instrument, please specify the one you will   use for the competition.)

3.   A letter (under 300 words) from a parent or guardian, presenting your family’s financial situation. (Failure to furnish a financial statement will cause a reduction in points in your evaluation.)

4.   A copy of your high school scholastic record, including your SAT or ACT scores.  (Note: including the student’s SAT/ACT score in the scholarship application is optional.)

5.   Letters of recommendation from your music teacher and a friend or school official.  Additional supportive documents may be included, if desired.
